Oil Cleansing Method Beauty Experiment - Part II

Inspired by all the resources I found online and oil cleanser samples from my coworker, I made my own personalized oil facial cleanser. This process of researching and gathering supplies took about two weeks, but it was well worth the wait!

Supplies:
*make sure all your containers are completely dry - otherwise the polysorbate-80 will react
  • 1 clean glass jar (in a previous life, it was a jam jar)
  • small plastic containers with caps
  • medicine droppers
  • (measuring spoons - 1/2 teaspoon and/or 1 tsp)
  • Jojoba oil (8.44 fl oz) from The Jojoba Company, purchased from Whole Foods - $13.49
  • Castor Oil (8 fl oz) from the HomeHealth brand, purchased from Whole Foods - $5.99
  • Polysorbate-80 (4oz by weight) purchased from Etsy seller CountrySoapShack - $4.95 + $2.50 shipping
    • CountrySoapShack also sells other oils, waxes, dyes, and raw materials for making beauty/body products
Note: There are also companies from which you can order materials online
Lotioncrafter carries polysorbate-80
Mountain Rose Herbs has a wide selection of oils, as well as essential oils that add lovely scents

Beauty Experiment
To test out the ratios of oils and polysorbate-80 that feels best on my skin, I made three different recipes. I labeled three containers A, B, and C.
A: 20% polysorbate-80, 40% castor oil, 40% jojoba oil (4, 8, 8 drops respectively)
B: 20% polysorbate-80, 30% castor oil, 50% jojoba oil (4, 6, 10) drops respectively)
C: 20% polysorbate-80, 20% castor oil, 60% jojoba oil (4, 4, 12 drops respectively)
As you might be able to tell, the more jojoba oil added, the more yellow the overall mixture looks. More importantly, jojoba oil is light and runny in texture compared to the polysorbate-80 and castor oil, both of which are quite viscous. I was looking to create a cleanser that's somewhere in between a runny and viscous texture.

After adding everything and giving the containers a good shake and swirl, I tested each mixture by applying the mixtures on different parts of my face. I massaged the cleanser into my skin and let it sit on my skin for about 2 minutes. Here are my thoughts:
A and B felt pretty similar and were about the right consistency. After 2 minutes, the cheek that I tested A on had absorbed all of the moisture and the oil was not very apparent. Skin I tested B on still had a trace of oil.
Right away, I knew that C had too much jojoba oil. It felt too runny for a cleanser and even after 2 minutes, my skin was still quite shiny.

In the end, I made a mixture that's 20% polysorbate-80, 55% jojoba oil, and 25% castor oil. Using a 1/2 teaspoon measuring spoon, I added 8, 22, and 10 (respectively) spoonfuls. Give the jar a good mix before each use.

Voila! This amount will last at least a month, after which I may tweak the ratios since the change in weather could change my skin needs.

I'll keep the jar inside my medicine cabinet, and use my cute ice cream cone shaped measuring spoon to spoon the cleanser out of the jar.
